God’s Love We Deliver, Inc., a nonsectarian organization, is the New York metropolitan area’s leading provider of life-sustaining meals and nutrition counseling for low-income people living with severe illnesses. Founded in 1985 as an HIV/AIDS service organization, today God’s Love cooks and delivers more than 7,000 meals daily for people living with more than 200 different illnesses. God’s Love provides meals that are medically tailored to the needs of each client through the guidance of our team of Registered Dietitians.  God’s Love provides our services at no charge to clients, thanks to a $19 million budget derived from gifts from thousands of individuals, as well as payments from Health Care Plans, government grants, foundations and corporations, and other sources.  Over 13,000 people volunteer each year to help God’s Love carry out this life-sustaining work.

About the Role

The Controller is responsible for compiling the monthly financial statements, cash flow statements and investment reports; managing the monthly closing process, including processing all general accounting transactions; updating policies and procedures; completing external financial reporting, managing external audits, and developing grant budgets and monthly vouchers and reports.

As the number-two executive to the CFO, the Controller will be involved in supporting presentations to the Board finance and audit committee and will work closely with the senior leadership team.

The Controller will lead all day-to-day finance operations and supervise a team of 4 staff members who are responsible for Finance functions including processing payroll and vendor payables, and fundraising, grant and Medicaid subcontract revenue. The Controller will ensure that God’s Love has the systems and procedures in place to support effective program implementation and conduct flawless audits. The Controller will work closely with program leaders and their teams, not only to educate them regarding finance and accounting procedures but also to explore how the finance function can support program operations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversee general accounting and financial operations, including the monthly close.
  • Prepare monthly financial statements and variance analyses, including detailed analysis of general ledger activity, cash projections and investment reports.
  • Develop and prepare periodic financial and operational Dashboards.
  • Maintain internal control and safeguards for receipt of revenue, costs, and program budgets and actual expenditures.
  • Prepare journal entries and balance sheet account reconciliations, including reconciling the investment and cash accounts.
  • Prepare monthly and annual grant reports and related invoices.
  • Oversee the processing of donations and billing of healthcare contracts
  • Assist the CFO in developing policies related to financial and operational management, including the general ledger, cash management, revenue recognition, accounts payable, allocations, payroll, financial reporting, investments and budget.
  • Support the CFO in preparing material for the Board and various Committees.
  • Manage the annual financial statement and the pension audit.
  • Conduct timely submissions of all federal and state tax filings.
  • Assist with responding to recommendations made by external auditors.
  • Assist the CFO in developing annual operating and capital budgets and serve as back-up for critical functions such as payroll processing.
  • Assist with evaluating and implementing various accounting related software.
  • Provide leadership and support to direct reports by coaching, counseling, and training. Create and support a positive work environment
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; maintaining professional networks; participating in professional associations

In addition, you meet the following requirements:

  • A minimum of 5-10 years of progressively responsible experience in accounting and finance, with prior experience in a Controller role preferred
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting
  • Demonstrated success in mentoring, training and supervising staff
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills, with the ability to translate complex financial concepts to individuals at all levels of the organization
  • Deep understanding of financial accounting and grants budgeting and reporting, with demonstrated competencies in substantially all aspects of the role described above
  • A record of accomplishment functioning as a team player with a collaborative approach to leadership
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively across departments to accomplish strategic initiatives and improve organizational performance
  • Strong project management skills and the ability to identify and implement process improvements, system upgrades and solutions
