About the Role

The Human Resources Generalist will be part of a full-service Human Resources team working together in managing HR needs across the employment life cycle including recruitment, benefits administration, HRIS/payroll data entry and reporting, and employee relations matters. The Human Resources Generalist provides day-to-day HR support to all managers and staff.  This is a hybrid position allowing for some remote work and requiring regular in office workdays.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Benefits Management:

  • Manages invoices, ensuring correct employee charges/allocations and creates invoices with expenses charged by department.
  • Enrolls and terminates employees from benefit plans. Troubleshoots enrollment issues including those related to qualifying events and court orders.
  • Reviews preliminary renewal data and makes suggestions on plan changes. Completes all census data required for bidding.
  • Coordinates open enrollment and ensures accurate enrollment changes including entry of all changes into provider systems and creation of master file of changes. Ensures all employees have completed required paperwork.
  • Completes Worker’s Compensation injury reports. Coordinates with Facilities for OSHA filing.
  • Provides FMLA/disability paperwork to employees and follows up on required paperwork and filings. Reviews payments to employees to ensure that they are correct.
  • Has a deep understanding of employee benefits and communicates options to employees.
  • Conducts employee benefits orientation for newly eligible staff. Creates and maintains up to date benefits information packets for new hires.
  • Manages all ACA reporting as required by Affordable Care Act.

 Employee Relations:

  • Counsels and assists employees with, and helps resolve, employment-related questions or concerns, including leave of absence and reasonable accommodation requests, and concerns about discrimination, harassment, or other workplace conduct.
  • Counsels and advises managers regarding employment-related matters including performance management, disciplinary warnings, terminations, reasonable accommodations, leaves of absence, use of accrued time off, avoiding discrimination and harassment, interpretation of employment policies and processes.

Employee Engagement:

  • Designs and facilitates training programs including Goal Setting, sexual harassment, and discrimination prevention training.
  • Plans and assists in monthly staff engagement activities, the annual Holiday Party, and the annual Staff Enrichment program.

HRIS data and reports:

  • Responsible for HR data integrity in HRIS/payroll database.
  • Enters and ensures accuracy of new hire, active employee, and termination data into HRIS system.
  • Ensures paperwork for all transactions is completed accurately and timely and is maintained appropriately.
  • Produces reports as needed from the HRIS/payroll system.
  • Completes reports including census data for 403(b) plan 5500 filing, EEO, and other reports as requested (e.g., for grant compliance).
  • Maintains employee listings and benefits files.
  • Assists in providing documentation during 403(b) and other audits.


  • Trains new employees in using the ADP Timekeeping system. Provides technical assistance in the use of ADP to staff.
  • Ensures payroll entries for new hires and terminations are made timely and accurately.
  • Updates employee records in HRIS system as necessary.
  • Responds to employee inquiries about payroll and benefits matters.
  • Reviews all garnishments and court orders and executes them as required.
  • Completes audits of payroll data to ensure overall integrity and accuracy.
  • Processes salary advance requests, including obtaining requisite approvals and preparing documentation for employee.


  • Maintains up to date job descriptions. Creates job postings for GLWD website.
  • Reviews resumes against job requirements and prescreens candidates. Sets up interview schedules for hiring manager. Interviews candidates and provides feedback to hiring manager.
  • Manages background check process, including compliance with FCRA and the NYC FCA.
  • Prepares offer letter documents and delivers to candidate to whom conditional offer has been extended.
  • Ensures all new hire paperwork and I-9 is completed in a timely fashion. Maintains I-9 and other new hire paperwork in compliance with legal requirements.
  • Facilitates new hire orientation and updates presentation deck as required.

In addition, you meet the following requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree
  • Two to four years of HR generalist experience with exposure to the full employment life cycle
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills as well as demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Knowledge of federal, local (NYC) and state (New York) employment laws
  • Deep expertise in HRIS systems is a plus; expertise in ADP Workforce Now is preferred
  • Capable of prioritizing multiple demands and exercising strong time management skills with acute attention to detail; work with a sense of urgency without sacrificing quality
  • Ability to maintain the highest degree of confidentiality and discretion, and to exercise sound judgment
  • Ability to be empathetic yet direct, with excellent listening skills
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus
  • Ability to communicate confidently with employees at every level
