Everything is more fun with a friend - especially volunteering! Every Thursday afternoon, good friends Janice Elkinson and Joyce McShane join their fellow volunteers to help Chuck the Baker package hundreds of delicious desserts for our clients. Between the two of them, Janice and Joyce have dedicated nearly 1,700 hours and 24 years of volunteer service together. They are both kind, committed and a joy to be around. God's Love is incredibly fortunate to have these amazing ladies as volunteers.
Janice and Joyce
Tell us how you met!
Janice: We first met at God's Love! I started first and I think Joyce came a few months later.
Joyce: At God's Love. We found out that we lived close to each other and had a lot in common. Janice invited my husband and me to dinner and we four had a great time together.
What makes your friend a great volunteer?
JE: She is devoted. She always shows up! Snow, rain or sleet. And she doesn't complain.
JM: She is always upbeat and willing to do any job to make things move smoothly.
What do you like best about volunteering together?
JE: The conversations. We have a lot of mutual interests (art, theater, movies, museums, etc.). We like to share our thoughts on those things and of course, we talk about our families.
JM: The trips back and forth to "work" are enjoyable and especially now with a little longer travel time, the time goes faster when we are together.
What do you like to do when you're not volunteering?
JE: We travel a lot. Always on the go either visiting our children (California, Colorado, Kentucky and Brooklyn) or flying to Paris or some either exciting city. We also enjoy exploring New York. We have lived here for 12 years and we really love it!
JM: I like to paint and movies are a favorite thing to do.
Any funny/memorable/quirky insider info you can give us on your friend that not everyone would know???
JE: Joyce loves music, especially rock and roll. She knows every word!
JM: A short time after we met, Janice started a two-generation book club with friends, my daughter and her niece and it is still going strong after ten years.
JE: In closing, I just want to say thank you to God's Love. I have met the most wonderful people working here. It has been a gift and I treasure it.
JM: God's Love is a great place to do good work and meet great people. I am so happy I found it!
