God's Love We Deliver
166 Avenue of the Americas
New York, NY 10013
A volunteer for almost 10 years, Joan Rajalingam is a wonderful asset to our organization. She's a dedicated volunteer, donating over 500 hours of service. Since God's Love moved to Brooklyn, she hasn't missed a beat, joining her beloved Thursday volunteer group every week. Staff member Pat Costello says, "Joan has a generous, kind spirit and also keeps us supplied with lots of homemade Indian delicacies!" We couldn't agree more - about her kindness AND her delicious food! Thanks Joan for all you do!
Joan about to start her shift in the kitchen!
Name: Joan Rajalingam
Volunteer Shift: Thursdays 4pm to 6pm
Volunteering since: 2005
How did you find out about God's Love? Through a fellow chef/student at God's Love, Tony Brisbane, from the artisan school in Long Island City where I too trained.
Why do you volunteer? I am a people person and love meeting and interacting with people. At God's Love, it is fun chatting and prepping. Besides, it's payback time. Some of us are more fortunate than others. There's never a fixed time to do what you have to do - whenever an opportunity arises, I volunteer. I have been volunteering since college days while a student at Sophia College in Mumbai. This was an all-women's college, run by Irish nuns so sewing and cooking was an ingrained thing. I love to be in the kitchen. At God's Love, I was thrilled to find out that there were opportunities for volunteers. I prep food with KJ, who is great. I also make 100 lbs of meatloaf once a month at a soup kitchen in the Lower East Side.
What do you like to do when you're not volunteering? I love to travel. I've traveled within India extensively, visited Europe, Middle East, the Emirates, Oman, Egypt, Jordan and Israel. I also teach Indian cuisine twice a year to teens on vacation during their summer and fall breaks and conduct classes occasionally for people who are on special diets such as low-fat and diabetic. I am a licensed New York State tour guide. I love New York City and showing it off to my relatives and friends. I love to do floral arrangements and table settings at events. I love going to the movies, theater and foraging for herbs in the parks.
What's something about yourself that people would be surprised to find out? I don't look like the volunteering kind and that I actually find time to do what I do, especially volunteering. I am single and when not working, why not do what I love best!
Best thing you've ever eaten: Lobster Thermidor made by our company chef during my tenure in the Sultanate of Oman.
Dream vacation destination: Monaco, South of France - would love to visit there again.
And finally... hairnet or hat??? With my long hair, it has to be the hairnet!
