It depends on the volunteer event you are signing up for. Culinary Volunteer roles, for example, do require some skills, and specific events like the Oyster Bash might require specific skills in oyster shucking, etc.. However, for general Event Support volunteers, no previous experience is necessary!

If you need to cancel, we ask that you do it as soon as possible so that we can ensure adequate coverage. You can do so by going through your account in our NYCWFF Volunteer Portal.

No, Volunteers do not get free tickets to the Festival. Depending on the event, there may be opportunities to try some of the food or enjoy the festivities, but by volunteering, you are committing to work with us, not to attend as a paying guest. If you would like to attend the Festival, you can buy tickets at this link.

If you have signed up for a shift, you are agreeing to work the full shift. We understand that things may come up last minute, but if you know about a conflict ahead of time, it would be best to find another volunteer opportunity that works better for your schedule.

No, Volunteers do not get paid for volunteering. There are still so many benefits to joining us to work at the festival, though, including the chance to meet and mingle with celebrity chefs and food personalities, make new friends, gain new experiences and skills, and give back to your community, while also supporting an organization that provides food to New Yorkers who are too sick to cook or shop for themselves!

Shirts will be provided to registered volunteers at their volunteer shift.

To ensure accurate coverage and recording, every volunteer must ⁠create an account and sign up for a shift before volunteering. If someone is not registered for the shift, they will not be permitted to volunteer.

For some of our smaller events like our lunches, brunches and dinners, some volunteers may just be needed to help out with registration and set up, so those shifts are shorter and tend to end shortly after the event itself begins. However, we may need other folks to stay longer for set-up, break down, distributing gift bags, etc., so those folks are asked to stay a little longer. You can choose which time frame works best for you, and the tasks you will be performing will be assigned to you when you arrive.

Unfortunately we do not have waitlists for events at the Festival. However, people cancel, shifts get added, and things change for all sorts of reasons from now sometimes right up until the day of the Festival, so keep checking in here to see if what you are looking for has become available!
