Every year our clients look forward to our thanksgiving feast. This meal, featuring all of the holiday’s classic dishes, with an extra helping to share with a guest, comes in a bag decorated by NYC school kids.
In a year where much has changed, God’s Love will be bringing the same sense of gratitude and cheer to our clients that we always do. You might even say this holiday will be more delicious… because our classic pumpkin soup will be sweetened with a very special winter squash: Trial squash from Row 7 Seeds, a seed company co-founded by chef Dan Barber, breeder Michael Mazourek, and seedsman Matthew Goldfarb.
This afternoon, our volunteers helped us break down 1,000 lbs of this innovative squash, which was bred to maximize sweet taste, nutritional content, smooth texture, and storability.
Our RDNs are always telling us to eat the rainbow! Look for brightly colored foods, they say. This vibrant orange squash is chock full of beta-carotene, which our bodies convert to Vitamin A– beneficial for vision and cell repair. This squash is also packed with Vitamins B and C, which can help boost the immune system and increase energy levels.
As Chef Daniel says, “food is medicine, but it doesn’t need to taste like it.” In this case, it can taste like a sweet, classic holiday bisque– sure to make anyone feel satiated and grateful.
We’re eternally grateful to Chef Mavis-Jay of Food + People for connecting us with Row 7 to receive this incredible bounty.
