Cooking Demonstrations: A Cornerstone of our Cardiovascular Health Curriculum

On Tuesday, July 22, 2025, we hosted our eighth cooking demonstration for participants of our groundbreaking AHA Healthcare by Food-funded cardiovascular health clinical trial. We are excited to share this unique and engaging event — a participant favorite! — of our study curriculum. Ultimately, our inclusion of these cooking demonstrations into the study is to demonstrate that the curriculum and the home-delivery of medically tailored meals from God’s Love We Deliver create long-term health and well-being success for these individuals.

Our clinical trial, “Enhancing, Culturally Adapting, and Expanding Medically Tailored Meals Programs to Promote Cardiovascular Health Equity,” is the first trial of its kind in New York City and an exciting collaboration with our study Principal Investigator, Nour Makarem, FAHA, PhD, a faculty member and cardiovascular epidemiologist at the Mailman School of Public Health.

Our cooking demonstrations, held in collaboration with the Columbia Community Partnership for Health staff, are a testament to our commitment to cardiovascular health and engaging in research projects that will continue to benefit current and future clients. These events, hosted in a welcoming space at the heart of Washington Heights, not only provide resources to participants but also foster a sense of community. In our latest demo, Harvest Home Farmer’s Market presented a demo that included making a healthy salad with seasonal vegetables. Additionally, staff members instructed our participants on how to utilize their benefits at the farmers’ market. They explained that Harvest Home has a continued commitment to forge and foster relationships with local farmers across New York State, as well as our multistakeholder partnership as part of this trial. Our event concluded with a tasting of fresh salad and the distribution of vegetable bags for our participants to take home.

Our cardiovascular health curriculum has continued to evolve with our participants’ needs and suggestions. It is now offered in both a hybrid format and via asynchronous videos sent directly to our participants after each session. We are thrilled to welcome everyone to Columbia and God’s Love, and we look forward to continuing our monthly demos.

Our study’s success could not have been achieved without the dedication and hard work of our fantastic team at Columbia: Ariana Lopez, Erica Wood, Marina Garcia Santos, and PI Nour Makarem. We are also grateful to Perla Vasquez and the rest of the Harvest Home team for their invaluable support. And of course, our God’s Love Nutrition team and Research students, past and present, have played a crucial role in our journey. We thank them all for their unwavering commitment to our trial.
