The legislation was introduced yesterday to the 119th Congress by Representatives James P. McGovern (D-MA), Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY), Chellie Pingree (D-ME), Dwight Evans (D-PA), and Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), alongside Senators Cory Booker (D-NJ), Roger Marshall (R-KS), Bill Cassidy (R-LA), and Tina Smith (D-MN). Their leadership underscores that addressing nutrition and health outcomes is not a partisan issue, but rather a shared priority.
If enacted, the MTM Bill would create a Medicare pilot program across 40 hospital sites in rural, urban, and suburban communities. The pilot will test the impact of medically tailored home-delivered meals on Medicare enrollees, a population that currently has no access to MTM coverage under traditional Medicare.
The evidence is clear: expanding access to medically tailored meals saves lives and saves money. Research shows that access to MTMs could prevent 2.6 million hospitalizations annually and reduce health care spending by an estimated $23.7 billion each year. Just as importantly, MTMs help people remain at home instead of entering long-term care facilities, support medication adherence, and improve overall quality of life.
