A Blessing: Honoring the Legacy of Black Culture Through Food and Fearless Advocacy

On Thursday, February 26, 2026, God’s Love We Deliver honored the amazing Chef Mavis-Jay for her many contributions to food justice and her unwavering commitment to uplifting Black culture. The event was moderated by Dorella Walters, Chief Program Development Officer at God’s Love, who guided a powerful conversation sharing the story of Chef Mavis-Jay’s journey and impact.

Black history is rich with stories of resilience and community care, and few modern leaders embody that legacy more fully than Mavis-Jay. Her true impact extends far beyond accolades; it lives in the communities she uplifts and the systems she works to transform.

Mavis-Jay is a fierce advocate for food equity in Black and low-income communities. She serves on the Culinary Council for God’s Love We Deliver, is a founding member of The Coalition for Aquaculture, and sits on the Investment Committee for Black Farmer Fund.

In honoring Black history, we celebrate leaders like Mavis-Jay who reclaim culinary traditions while forging new futures. She defines her life’s mission with humility: when asked what she wants to be when she grows up, her answer remains, “a blessing.” Through fearless advocacy and an unshakable belief in community transformation, she continues to prove that honoring Black culture through food is not only an act of remembrance, but an act of revolutionary love.
