Day of Service – NYC Mayor’s Public Engagement Unit at Liberty BKLYN

We were honored to welcome these staff members and interns and show them our process of preparing and delivering medically tailored meals to over 15,000 people annually. Ashley Bailey, a Community Coordinator at the PEU, said that it was good to “stretch our arm a little longer” at GLWD to reach more members of the community. Ashley herself heard of the PEU over 7 years ago through receiving help to obtain childcare vouchers for her daughter’s daycare. Ashley noted that many of the people that the PEU serves are among a similar population of our GLWD clients.

Kenny Lin, one of the CUNY student summer interns, also connected his Day of Service fulfillment shifts to the work he has done for the PEU. Kenny noted that both organizations focus on helping build other’s social safety nets, whether through food or government and community benefits. Kenny noted that the most impactful part of his internship is that he is “bursting out of his neighborhood bubble” and exploring other parts of the city to make a positive impact. He said there is a lot of “doom and gloom” in the world right now, and it is important to still make a positive impact right in your own neighborhood and city.

We are grateful to the PEU for volunteering with us for their Day of Service. Ashley mentioned that a good portion of the interns come back to work for the PEU or other city departments upon their college graduation, filling roles such as city council members, etc. We hope to partner again with the Mayor’s office and build solidarity in all our work to support our neighbors.
