The second season of The Voice ends tonight and it has been a thrilling ride. The judges, contestants and all of America have been wrapped up, week after week, in the voices and performances of just a few dozen individuals with unique sounds and images trying to win as the on NBC’s hit show. Our van assistant volunteer and singer extraordinaire, Jamar Rogers, catapulted to the top as a fan-favorite this season, and he was thrilling to watch.
While the world has known Jamar as a singer and contestant on The Voice, we at God’s Love are truly lucky in that we also know him as the generous, dedicated and compassionate volunteer. This past summer, Jamar began van assisting at God’s Love, helping deliver our delicious and nutritious, freshly prepared and individually tailored meals to our clients.
Shortly after he began at God’s Love, Jamar sent us an email describing what volunteering with us has meant to him, saying, “I’ve had the pleasure of serving food to people on the East and West sides of Manhattan, Brooklyn, Harlem and Washington Heights. I say pleasure because in serving others, it helps me prioritize my own problems and issues. There is nothing more rewarding than delivering a meal and a smile to someone that desperately needs it.”
We know we are so fortunate to have such a special person and volunteer in our God’s Love family. We appreciate his call to action in his email when he said, “I urge anyone that’s ever considered volunteering on the van routes to just take a few hours out of one day of the week to be the hands that deliver a little love to our love-starved city.”
Before Jamar left for the West Coast and The Voice, he stopped by God’s Love for a kick-off party. He solemnly spoke about his experiences as an HIV+ individual and what God’s Love means to him. Staff and volunteers of God’s Love surrounded him with the love that he so readily projects and cheered him as he burst on to the scene and into our hearts as the singer and talented performer that he is.
At the blind auditions, Jamar wowed us all with his rendition of “Seven Nation Army.” His next competition, during which he battled Team Cee Lo teammate Jamie Lono with “I Wanna Know What Love Is”, we were floored by his belting voice and that “singer’s vein” judge Christina Aguilera was so wild about. His talents continued and his performances peeked week after week as he wowed the audience, judges and all of us with “Are You Gonna Go My Way,” and “It’s My Life.”
Finally, Jamar took to the stage and soulfully sang “If You Don’t Know Me By Now” in the Semifinals of The Voice. Battling teammate Juliet Smalls and just two others, Jamar, unfortunately, did not make it to the Finals. Jamar battled with a truly talented and eclectic group of people remaining a crowd, fan and judge favorite with his generous nature, his positive spirit, his contagious energy and, of course, his amazing voice and stage presence.
We are so proud of Jamar and all that he has done and grateful to have him as a part of our God’s Love family. Although Jamar did not make the Finals, bowing out in the Semis, we know that despite this setback, he will soar! He already has.

In case you missed it, here’s his story.
