Earlier this month, God’s Love Nutrition Services Director, Lisa Zullig, was guest speaker at the second of a series of Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Food as Medicine Coffee Breaks, as part of their new Food as Medicine (FAM) hub. The focus of the interactive conversation was the role of Dietetics professionals in Meal Delivery Programs and the event had over 400 participants from across the country.
As Lisa explained, God’s Love has been doing FAM for over 40 years, and “this is the work that dietitians have always done.” Highlighting the essential role of dietitians to the success of any FAM program, a meal delivery program in particular combines client facing work, as well as decision making that Dietitians are qualified to do around kitchen and food safety procedures, ensuring that standards are maintained, as well as ensuring that the meals meet the nutrition and cultural standards of the populations served.
Lisa highlighted that MTM delivery programs increase access to care and that these programs benefit the individual and the healthcare system, with research showing many positive impacts for people living with chronic illnesses including disease management, medication adherence, improved health outcomes, improved quality of life, and improved eating habits and nutrition status, with a shout-out to FIMC organizations around the country who are doing this essential work.
Thank you, Lisa, for highlighting the indispensable work of Dietitians in FAM and meal delivery programs!
