Public Health Begins with Us: Advocating for Health Equity Through Medically Tailored Meals
This National Public Health Week, we’re embracing the 2025 themes set by the American Public Health Association: “Health Equity Starts Here” and “Advocacy Starts Here.” At God’s Love We Deliver, we know that health equity is about more than access to a hospital; it’s about ensuring that every person, regardless of geography or income, can access the care and services they need to live a healthy life. That’s why we have been proud to support the Medically Tailored Home-Delivered Meals Demonstration Pilot Act (H.R.6780), a crucial step toward embedding equity and advocacy into the very heart of our national healthcare system.
This bipartisan bill, introduced during the last session of Congress, would establish a Medicare demonstration pilot in at least 40 hospitals—located in urban, suburban, and rural communities across the country—to evaluate the impact of medically tailored meals (MTMs) on patients living with chronic, diet-sensitive diseases such as congestive heart failure, diabetes, COPD, and chronic kidney disease. These are individuals who often experience frequent hospitalizations and high healthcare costs—challenges that MTMs have been proven to help mitigate.
Medically tailored meals are more than food. They are a lifesaving, low cost, and high impact intervention carefully designed by Registered Dietitian Nutritionists, tailored to a person’s unique medical needs, and delivered to the doors of people who are too sick to shop or cook for themselves. These meals improve clinical outcomes, reduce hospital admissions, and dramatically cut healthcare costs.
In fact, new research published in Health Affairs projects that a national implementation of medically tailored meals could save $32.1 billion and avert 3.5 million hospitalizations in the first year alone—even after covering the cost of meals.
The Demonstration Pilot Act builds equity into its design. By requiring CMS to implement the program across diverse geographies—including medically underserved and rural areas—the bill ensures that this life-saving intervention reaches communities that have long been excluded from comprehensive, holistic care. And by prioritizing Medicare beneficiaries with multiple chronic illnesses and functional limitations, it targets care to those who need it most.
At God’s Love, we’ve seen firsthand how powerful this intervention can be. Every day, we deliver meals to some of New York’s most vulnerable residents—people living with severe illness, limited mobility, and complex care needs. We’ve been proud to advocate for H.R.6780 alongside our New York delegation and will continue to fight for its reintroduction and passage because public health doesn’t end within the walls of a hospital—it continues at home, at the table, and in the nourishment we provide.
We’re also proud to continue this advocacy as a founding member of the Food is Medicine Coalition, working alongside peer agencies from across the country. Together, we are stronger, more vocal, and more effective in making the case that food is not a luxury—it is medicine.
This National Public Health Week, we invite you to join us in advocating for the importance of medically tailored meals. Health equity and public health advocacy must go hand in hand, and the Medically Tailored Home-Delivered Meals Demonstration Pilot Act is a vital opportunity to push our healthcare system closer to both.
Because health equity starts here, with a meal.
And advocacy starts here, with us.
