Before my first time volunteering at God’s Love, I decided to visit their website and learn more about the organization’s history. What I discovered truly moved me. God’s Love was founded by Ganga Stone, a hospital volunteer who began delivering meals to people living with AIDS in New York City during the 1980s. Her compassion and determination grew into a mission that would eventually touch thousands of lives. The simplicity of her idea, caring for others through food, embodies the best of what community service can be.
Obviously, this story is touching to anyone, but to me, it is especially powerful. I have two dads who were both living as gay young men in New York City during the height of the HIV/AIDS crisis. Learning that God’s Love was founded to help the very community that my parents belong to made the story feel incredibly personal. It connected my family’s history to my volunteer work in a deeply emotional way.
Every shift I spend at God’s Love feels like a small way to honor them, their community, and the resilience of those who came before me.
