As the tenth anniversary of 9/11 approaches this Sunday, many of our staff are thinking about that day and remembering the overwhelming fear and sadness we all experienced. As we remember, it is also a time to recall the efforts made by staff and volunteers at God’s Love to aid our community in its time of distress.
As the events of 9/11 unfolded, we did so much to help. We got a special exemption to stay open and restarted deliveries within just a few days. We brought over 3,000 meals to first responders at Ground Zero and at our local firehouse. We opened our building to first responders to use as a place of rest. This was a very brave and sad moment for everyone at God’s Love, and as we remember those days we are sobered by our losses and thankful to have been a part of the relief efforts so early in the crisis.
In the years since the disaster, we have helped in the reconstruction of Lower Manhattan. Our presence in this community has been pivotal, not only for our clients in the area, but also for the volunteers and corporate groups who work in our kitchen, in our offices and on our delivery vans. We are very proud to be part of the rebuilding effort in lower Manhattan.
On Sunday, we will remember the events of 9/11 and its aftermath with our volunteers. No matter where you are on Sunday, please take a moment to remember along with us.
