The findings of a recent study written about the New York Times the need for timely screening in pregnancy for gestational diabetes. This study is also a reminder of the need to engage in conversations with young people who have existing diabetes during their childbearing years while planning for pregnancy. Hospital and health clinic diabetes screening programs for young people would serve as an excellent opportunity to raise awareness of, diagnoses and treat early, especially in areas where people of color reside due to the increased risk of developing the condition. By identifying diabetes early, education can start and be focused on reducing the risks of diabetes in pregnancy.
Access to a nutritionally adequate diet during pregnancy is an important element in quality care. Carbohydrate consistent meals consumed in small frequent meals and snacks including whole grains, legumes, vegetables, and important minerals such as calcium ensure the best possible nutrition-related health outcomes.
God’s Love We Deliver partners with community and clinical partners to serve people with pre-existing Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes as well as gestational Diabetes. Through the Pregnancy and Post Partum Program known as Healthy Starts, God’s Love provides Medically Tailored Meals to pregnant people with diabetes coupled with extensive education and counseling throughout the pregnancy and post-partum period.
During Black Maternal Health Week, we are reminded of the urgent need to address the disparities that Black pregnant people face in our healthcare system. This study revealed the connection between maternal diabetes and neurodevelopmental issues for children, which affects up to one-third of women globally. Among Black women, the rates of gestational diabetes are significantly higher compared to other groups, which further compounds the risks to both maternal and child health.
Black women are disproportionately affected by gestational diabetes, which can lead to complications like high blood pressure, preeclampsia, and delivery complications, as well as long-term risks for both the mother and child.
This Black Maternal Health Week, at God’s Love We Deliver we hope to raise awareness of the importance of prenatal care and early detection but also advocate for improved healthcare access, resources, and support for communities disproportionately impacted by conditions like gestational diabetes.
