National Nutrition Month: Happy RDN Day!

Each spring, the observance of National Nutrition Month in March brings heightened awareness of food, nutrition and health issues to communities across the country. These issues are core to our work at God’s Love and are always the focus for our Nutrition Services Department.

Here at God’s Love, we have some of the most dedicated and knowledgeable Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs) around! This Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Day, we want to take a moment to highlight some of the things that make our RDNs such a critical part of God’s Love.

From the direct work with clients, to food safety oversight in the facility, our team of RDNs strive to improve the health and well-being of our clients with serious illnesses. While the team’s scope of work is wide-ranging, the overall goal is to provide care for our clients, as well as, to promote food as medicine.

Our RDNs provide medical nutrition therapy (MNT) and nutrition counseling to our clients. These services are a key strength of our program: combining the expertise of a RDN with the provision of medically tailored meals. The delicious meals created by our Culinary team are also guided by nutrition standards maintained by our RDNs. This ensures that our meals are appropriate for the nutritional needs of our clients with a variety of medical conditions.

The team provides ongoing counseling and education to our clients and the community on a variety of topics like HIV, nutrition and cancer, and diabetes self-care. In addition to work with individual clients, our RDNs create webinars, educational modules, and written fact sheets and publications, many of which are available on our website, in multiple languages. It goes without saying that strict attention to food safety and sanitation is paramount to the successful achievement of our mission. Working with our Culinary, Facilities and Fulfillment teams, our RDNs assist in agency food safety and sanitation practices to ensure that food travels safely within the facility to our clients’ homes.

Finally, one of the department’s favorite activities is training and mentoring future RDNs. Year round, the team trains Dietetic Interns and mentors nutrition students, sharing critical knowledge and experience unique to community based RDNs.
